Free VIN and recall check

Enter a vehicle identification number (VIN) to see what NHTSA's records say about how the car was built and which safety recalls cover its make, model and year.

This check needs JavaScript. You can look up open recalls for your exact vehicle on NHTSA's official site instead:

  1. Find the 17-character VIN on the driver's side of the dashboard (visible through the windshield), on the driver's door jamb, or on your registration or insurance card.
  2. Go to NHTSA's recall lookup and enter the VIN.
  3. NHTSA shows any recall that has not been repaired on that vehicle in the last 15 years.

What this check shows, and what it doesn't

  • Vehicle details come from NHTSA's vPIC decoder. They describe how the car was built, not its history.
  • Recalls are every NHTSA recall for the vehicle's make, model and year. Not every one may apply to this exact car, and some may already have been repaired.
  • No open recalls found does not guarantee the car is recall-free or safe. Confirm with NHTSA's lookup by VIN or a franchised dealer, who can check this exact vehicle.
  • We don't store, log or share the VINs you check. See our privacy policy.
